Isaac Chair

The much anticipated chair quarter has come and gone. It was by far my favorite quarter and lived up to the hype I had built up for it. I am really happy with the way my chair turned out. I am also really impressed with the work our studio turned out. Check out everyone's chair's here on Kyle's Flickr page.

Also check out more pictures of my chair here.

And the awesome time laps video Ross put together, very cool stuff.

Sometimes I'm Amazed...

So I am pretty sure I have been missing out for the last year or so, but I came across the coolest thing ever as far as an Industrial Design student who is really in to the manufacturing process is concerned. I was given a Protomold Sample Cube today in my Materials and Processes class. And I must say, this little thing taught me more in 30 minutes of exploration than my entire last year of Materials and Processes (granted my class has taught me a lot, but this thing is amazing). I tend to get hung up on little things like this. They are the things that just intrigue me, like take for instance the dimensions of a chair...I have been blown away for the whole quarter at how short chairs are. Anyway have a great Sex de Mayo!

The Chair

I've been looking forward to Chair quarter since before I even began here at DAAP, and now it's here and I have been working quite a bit to make something that both I will like and others will enjoy. I want it to be simple and elegant but be advanced in the area of engineering and material interaction. Check them out here. Of course there was a lot of drawing up to this stage, but this stuff is much prettier. Enjoy!

New York, New York!

I am in shock right now...but at the same time SUPER pumped, because today I filled out my internship offer letter to coop with Fuseproject in NYC! I will be interning with them from the end of September until the end of December. So this means I am going to be double sectioning this summer and fall quarter on coop, and this also means that I am still in need of a coop for the summer quarter. But anyway, Fuseproject is a successful brand building design consultancy based in San Francisco; they just recently opened a smaller office in the heart of SOHO which is where I will be working. They were founded by Yves Behar in 1999 and are most well known for their work on the Jawbone Blue tooth Headset, One Laptop Per Child, Y Water, the Herman Miller Leaf Lamp, and many more. These are some shots of their products...

YES!

Holy F! Where the Wild Things Are!!!! You have got to be kidding me! Probably the greatest book EVER is being made into a movie! I loved this book soooo much as a kid, probably so much that I won't want to go see it and ruin it! a guy on Kitsune Noir quoted it best. "I only read this book 1241551 bajillion times!" The trailer looks a bit creepy, and makes me probably not want to see it...but the poster is dope!

I must say, this poster made my day. The only other book that I can think of that could rival Where the Wild Things Are is Knots on a Counting Rope.

Childhood was amazing...

The Hipster Prank

I learned a new 'hip' game today. It's very easy to play, and very amusing.

First: If you are walking down the street and see a hipster, just simply shout out, "Hey Hipster!"

Next: Wait for them to turn around, and when they do...watch the Hipster get angry at themselves for turning around and acknowledging that they are a Hipster! Ha!

Isn't that a fun game? You should try it sometime!

I got no hate for Hipsters, it's just an amusing game.

Oldschoolin' it...

So my drawing teacher from freshman year, Hollis Hammonds, recently contacted me about some of my drawings that I had done. She is teaching down in Austin Texas right now and told me that she wanted to make a drawing instruction book, and contacted me because she wanted to use some of my drawings that she remembered liking a lot. I was like heck yea! So I emailed her pictures and she said the book could be done by then end of the summer and she already has her ISBN #! So excited to see what the book looks like. Here are some of the images that I sent her. They are old, but I personally was shocked that I turned out this decent of work my freshman year...enjoy!

The Never Ending Story...of the Portfolio

I have always loved that movie. The big white dog that could fly was my undisputed favorite; I think it scared a lot of people but I was always a fan. I also liked David Bowie before I ever even knew he was a crazy musician (for whom I happen to love his music now) who stared in another favorite childhood movie of mine, Labyrinth. But anyway, that is besides the point...the point is...

I think I can officially say that it is UP, and it is OUT for the world to see; My portfolio that is. I have been working a lot lately after work on my new design portfolio. I have a problem with altogether re-designing my portfolio every time it comes to re-applying for internships. For those who read this and don't know. I go to the University of Cincinnati where the Cooperative Education Program is required for some majors, included in that is my major of Industrial Design and our program is a 5 year degree because of this. After our second year we start our "coop" rotation or internship rotation. Because UC is on a quarter system it makes this easier. We alternate quarters at school with quarters on internship across the US and around the world and we continue this for the next three years until we graduate. For instance, for the past two years every Fall and Spring quarter of the year I am at school and in classes, but every Summer and Winter quarter I am out of town at an internship in my field. It becomes simple math. 12 quarters, 6 in class and 6 at internships = moving 12 times in 3 years gets kinda crazy! But it has been an experience I wouldn't change for anything. I have lived in Boston for 6 months, and most recently Chicago for 6 Months, and without this program, that never would have happened. And I have to apologize to my professors, because despite how much they have taught me, there is no substitution for real world experience and just simply getting tossed into the mix and designing when it counts.

But anyway, that is off topic again...I guess I keep getting off topic because the topic is simple, it's my portfolio, so check it out!
